Sixteen-year-old Greta Thunberg and other young environmental activists are set to meet in the UN headquarters in New York City on Saturday, September 21, for the Youth Climate Summit.

The event precedes the UN Climate Change Summit 2019. Its goal is that young climate activists from around the world showcase their solutions on how to combat the environmental crisis.

The young participants are attending the event after being awarded ‘Green Tickets’ based on their “demonstrated commitment to addressing the climate crisis and advancing solutions,” according to the UN.

Greta, who became a global icon for her activism, gained fame in August 2018 after she skipped school to sit down outside the Swedish parliament with a sign reading ‘school strike for climate’.

Her strike reverberated around the world and set off a global movement of student demonstrations to highlight the urgency of the climate crisis, which inspired the ‘Fridays for Future’ protest.
