The world is filled with creepy, abandoned places. Are you brave enough to spend the night in at least
one of them? Today we will be looking at 13 of the scariest abandoned places in the world. Make sure
you stay tuned for number one, it is actually considered as one of the most haunted places on earth.

Number 13. Battleship Island
About nine miles from the city of Nagasaki sits an abandoned island, void of inhabitants but steeped in
history. Also known by its real name Hashima Island or by its other, more ominous nickname, Ghost
Island, it housed a coal mining facility during its heyday from the late-19th to mid-20th century. The
island is also home to a hospital, school, and restaurants, now all in disrepair.
During World War II, the history of the island is darker as Japanese wartime mobilization policies
exploited enlisted Korean civilians and Chinese prisoners of war as forced laborers. Made to work under
harsh conditions, it’s estimated that over 1,000 workers died on the island between the 1930s and the
end of the war as a result of unsafe working conditions, malnutrition, and exhaustion.
Once the coal reserves started depleting and petroleum began replacing coal, the mines shut down and
the people left. After that, Hashima Island went ignored for nearly three decades.
Oh, and you might recognize it from the James Bond film Skyfall, in which Hashima Island served as the
lair of the film's villain. Creepy, indeed.

Number 12. Garnet, Montana
Garnet, Montana is situated in a remote valley located at the head of First Chance Creek, 6,000 feet up
in the green pine forested mountains east of Missoula. Garnet has an isolated feel to it and is not heavily
touristed or commercialized. As you might expect, Garnet has a reputation of being a haunted ghost
town.
Garnet dates back to the turn to the 20th century. It was named for the semi-precious garnet rock first
mined there before gold was found. Like most mining towns, Garnet wasn’t built to last, yet over a
century later, buildings lacking foundations still stand.
Twenty years after it was established, the gold in Garnet ran out. AS few as 150 people remained in
Garnet and most of the mines were abandoned by 1905. A fire raged through the town in 1912,
destroying many commercial establishments. Garnet was never rebuilt, and employment opportunities
presented by World War I lured remaining residents away.
Now, the once booming mining town sits abandoned, a mere shadow of its once prosperous past.

Number 11. Pripyat, Ukraine

Pripyat is well-known because of the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant disaster that took place in 1986.
Once housing thousands of plant workers, as well as their families, the entire city had to be evacuated
after an accident caused a leak of nuclear radiation.
It is also home to one of the creepiest places you will ever see, an abandoned theme park which was
never officially opened, but used once to calm down nervous citizens while waiting to be evacuated.
Now, the town stands empty, with few remnants of the lives that once existed there.

Number 2. Cape Romano Dome Houses
Built in Florida in 1981 on Ten Thousand Island which is south of Marco Island, and only accessible via
water. The island belongs to a larger group of Ten Thousand Islands. The ultra-modern Dome House is a
complex of stilted concrete igloos slowly being reclaimed by the sea.
A number of legends have sprung up surrounding the origins of the crumbling cluster of domes at the tip
of Cape Romano. Everything from a secret cult to aliens have been credited with creating the space-age
buildings but the truth is that the now-empty concrete bubbles were born from the mind of retired oil
producer, Bob Lee.
The firm beach on which the domes were built began to be overtaken by the sea, until the domes were
surrounded on all sides by water. They only survive thanks to the concrete pillars elevating them above
the water level.

Number 1. Poveglia Island
Poveglia Island is one of 166 islets in the Venice Lagoon off the eastern coast of Northern Italy. Although
it has served various purposes, this place is well-known for its macabre past. Tens of thousands of dead
and living Black Plague victims were brought here across centuries. Corpses piled up in pits were burned
in large fires. In fact, it has been said that most of the sand on the island is actually ashe from cremated
human remains.
In later years, mentally ill patients in the institution suffered heinous tortures and experiments at the
hands of a mad doctor, who he himself was said to have killed himself, tortured into madness by the
spirits of his victims.
