Emotionally Focused Therapy, (EFT), Dr. Erin Margolis, Psy.D., Thrive Psychology Group, Los Angeles Dr. Erin Margolis, from Thrive Psychology Group explains Emotion Focused Therapy, or EFT.

EFT is an empirically-validated treatment that focuses on exploring, understanding, and processing emotions in a comprehensive and effective way. EFT sees emotions as the currency with which we navigate through life. When core emotions are not fully processed, understood, or organized, it can lead to vulnerabilities and sensitivities, impact the way we relate ourselves and to others, and color the way we perceive interactions, interpret experiences, and respond to thoughts and emotions.

EFT is grounded in attachment theory, which basically emphasizes two crucial principles: humans are social beings who are hard-wired to have emotional bonds with others; and people develop an attachment style based on the emotional bonds (or lack thereof) they experience early in life, which influence how they function, experience challenges, relate to others, and respond to distress to as an adult. Having healthy attachments improves the ability to regulate emotions, increases social adjustment, and optimizes overall mental health, whereas unhealthy attachments increases vulnerability to things like anxiety related disorders, depression, and decreased resilience after traumatic events. Those with more attachment difficulties struggle to use emotions in a healthy way that can help them overcome challenges, fulfill needs, and meet goals. EFT acknowledges the influences of the past while staying grounded in present-moment experiences of emotions to deepen awareness and allow new emotional processing to emerge.
