International Symposium on Community Health Workers - 2019 Assalamu Alaikum and Greetings from Pan Pacific Sonargaon Hotel to attend in the 2nd International Symposium on ‘Community Health Workers from 22-24 November 2019 in Dhaka, Bangladesh.
The symposium was organised by icddr,b in collaboration with the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS), Ministry of Health and Family Welfare (MoHFW), Government of Bangladesh; BRAC James P Grant School of Public Health (JPGSPH) and Save the Children, Bangladesh.
This year’s theme of the Symposium is “Potentials of Community Health Workers in Prevention and Control of Non-Communicable Diseases (NCDs) in the Context of Universal Health Coverage (UHC).”
Community Health Workers (CHWs) have been a powerful workforce in promoting health services as well as strengthening health systems around the world. As per WHO, Community health workers should be members of the communities where they work, should be selected by the communities, should be answerable to the communities for their activities, should be supported by the health system but not necessarily a part of its organization, and have shorter training than professional workers.
For Bangladesh, a CHW is a permanent resident of a particular community, assigned by government/non-government organization who provides promotive, preventive, limited curative care, rehabilitative, palliative and referral services in relation to maternal, neonatal, child & adolescent health, family planning, nutrition, communicable and non-communicable diseases to his/her community and shall be held accountable for the nonperformance of these services."
The CHWs are unsung heroes and have been a powerful workforce in promoting health services around the world. Informally originated in China in the 1920s, they were initially engaged is birth and death registration, vaccination, providing basic health education and first-aid services.
The Dhaka symposium intends to bring academics, health experts, development partners and other relevant professionals to a common platform to discuss about the past successes and challenges with the CHWs.
The Dhaka symposium represented a renewed, re-energised vision and engagement of the community health workers to act and deliver interventions that would address emerging challenges of non-communicable diseases. Over the last 100 years, CHWs have been successfully working on key areas such as birth and death registration, vaccination, providing basic healthcare, education, and counseling services.

That’s it
