In the wake of protest from the Jaintia Hills Amalgamated & Redressal Forum or JARF on the implementation of Mines and Minerals Development Regulation Act, Meghalaya CM Conrad Sangma said that it is the responsibility of the state government to ensure that economic activities, livelihood opportunities and environmental safety moves side by side. The JARF is seeking exemption from the MMDR Act and is contemplating to put pressure on the Jaintia Hills Autonomous District Council, Executive Committee to re-appeal to the Supreme Court for exemption of MMDR Act in the state. Talking to newsmen, Chief Minister Conrad Sangma said that everybody has their own right to express their concern but as a Government, it is their responsibility to ensure that economic activities and livelihood of the people as well as issue of environment and safety of miners are not affected.
