TRANSCRIPT:
ON THE MAVERICKS 24 MADE THREE-POINTERS TONIGHT:
“Well, first of all they are the number one offense in the league for a reason. They have a lot of good shooters and they run great stuff and they execute. Luka (Dončić) is a tremendous player. You try a lot of different things against him and we had some breakdowns that left open some shooters. I thought we did a good job in the first half kind of mixing it up and staying in the game. Obviously, D’Angelo (Russell) was just incredible with his shooting, but when you kind of throw double-teams like that you are leaving your defense exposed on the backside and they made us pay.”
ON THE STATUS OF D’ANGELO RUSSELL:
“Yeah, I think the official diagnosis was a right shoulder contusion. I think there was concern because he was hit in the neck and had some pain in his neck, but yeah, I was thrilled to see he was ok. When (Assistant Coach) Mike (Brown) told me that he was going to come back into the game I was surprised. I thought he was out for sure. That was great news. That was probably the best news of the evening because that was pretty scary stuff.”
ON HIS OVERALL THOUGHTS ON THE FIVE-GAME HOMESTAND:
“Yeah, a really good homestand. Obviously, our best stretch of basketball this season. Our defense held up really well the first four and tonight we ran into the best offensive team in the league. We just couldn’t sustain the effort. We seemed to run out of gas in the second half, but a great homestand. The big thing now is not let tonight take away from what we have done the last couple of weeks. We have to keep building and keep getting better.”
ON IF THEY’VE MADE PLANS ON WHAT THEY WILL DO WITH THEIR TWO-WAY PLAYERS:
“Not sure yet. We have to see where Loon (Kevon Looney), Eric (Paschall) and Omari (Spellman) are. Once all of those guys are healthy we will have a better feel for what we need to do.”
ON IF HE WAS SURPRISED BY THE FEISTY PLAY BETWEEN BOTH TEAMS:
“Well it was a competitive game for long stretches and you have competitive guys out there. Draymond (Green) always has a chip on his shoulder. Luka is a great player and he’s competitive. It’s one of the things I love about him is that he’s got a lot of tricks for a young guy. I think he pulled on Marquese’s (Chriss) arm and Marquese didn’t like that and we were down 25 or whatever it was, so he was frustrated. It’s the highest competition in the world basketball wise, so this happens. Guys get frustrated and guys get competitive.”
ON HAVING A FLUID DEFENSIVE GAMEPLAN AGAINST LUKA DONČIĆ:
“You have to be able to change defenses to keep them off balance. First half, we disrupted them a little bit and they still had 72 points. They’re a hell of a team. Rick (Carlisle) is doing a fantastic job. They are a really, really difficult team to guard with not only Luka, but with all the shooters they have. With the offense they run, they put you in a lot of difficult spots.”
