Ear wax removal is necessary when ear wax build up becomes impacted. Symptoms causes by earwax blockage include: earache (otalgia), conductive hearing loss, blocked ear, vertigo, tinnitus, itchiness and irritation, occlusion etc.
The client attended with occluding ear wax in the right ear. He had the worst type of ear wax consistency for all instrumentation. His ear wax consistency can be described as clay type or wet thick mud. This makes it very difficult to hook, scoop, grip and indeed suction.
After removing the lateral layer of earwax I instilled some olive oil drops. This allowed me to removed the mid-section of ear wax. I then instilled some sodium bicarbonate ear wax drops. This helped to loosen the wet mud type of ear wax off the eardrum.
There was some residual ear wax remaining in the anterior recess. As the client found it slightly uncomfortable due to this part of the ear being extremely sensitive, I decided not to continue trying to remove this ear wax. It was on the canal wall and not the eardrum and wasn’t causing the client any symptoms, and thus non-significant. By attempting to remove the ear wax wouldn’t provide the client any additional benefit and instead cause him unnecessary discomfort. This ear wax will now naturally migrate outwards on it’s own accord given the occluding ear wax previously occluding it has been extracted.
