12 Jan 2020 | Nissan Wants A Reputation For EV Performance Show #664

Good morning, good afternoon and good evening wherever you are in the world, welcome to EV News Daily for Sunday 12th January 2020. It’s Martyn Lee here and I go through every EV story to save you time.

Thank you to MYEV.com for helping make this show, they’ve built the first marketplace specifically for Electric Vehicles. It’s a totally free marketplace that simplifies the buying and selling process, and help you learn about EVs along the way too.

Welcome to new Patreon supporters. DARREN FEATCH EXECUTIVE PRODUCER.

ABB SELECTED BY IONITY FOR SECOND PHASE OF EUROPEAN CHARGING NETWORK EXPANSION

ABB has received an order for a further 324, 350 kW high-power electric vehicle (EV) chargers from IONITY. The chargers are to be rolled out in 24 countries by the end of 2020 as part of the second phase of its network expansion.

ABB was already commissioned in 2018 as technology partner to deliver 340 high-power chargers to IONITY and was the first to market in Europe with 350 kW chargers featuring liquid cooled cables.

IONITY has to date opened 202 charging sites across 18 European markets.

TOYOTA’S SLOW START IN THE BEV ARENA

"Toyota is apparently planning worldwide sales of only 500,000 purely electric cars in 2025, which is only a fraction of what other automakers such as VW and Tesla are planning." says electrive: "An article in the Japanese business newspaper Nikkei reports that these e-targets Toyota would just enable Toyota to meet environmental regulations in China and Europe. At least ten new BEV models from Toyota are scheduled to make their international debut by 2025, with the Lexus UX 300e making its debut this year. Toyota only plans to produce 10,000 electric cars this year and 30,000 next year, while all of the company’s electric vehicles will be made at the Motomachi factory in Toyota City, according to the report."

DRAKO GTE EV SUPER SEDAN

"The Drako GTE is a forthcoming electric performance sedan, and in a new video the company shows off how it performs against a Tesla Model S P100D Ludicrous+, which is competing in a similar segment." according to Motor1.com: "The angle in this video makes it appear that the GTE and Model S remain fairly close at the launch. Then, the Drako's extra power then gives the car a huge advantage through the rest of the race. The Drako GTE packs four electric motors – one per wheel – that make a combined 1,200 horsepower (895 kilowatts). Total wheel torque is a claimed 6,500 pound-feet (8,813 Newton-meters). The company indicates the top speed is 206 mph (332 kph). It uses a 90-kilowatt-hour battery, and a Drako Motors spokesperson indicates that the estimated driving range is 250 miles (402 kilometers). Performance is more about speed, and the GTE also uses Öhlins four-way adjustable suspension components and carbon-ceramic Brembo brakes."

NISSAN E-4ORCE PROTOTYPE FIRST DRIVE

From Brett Berk at Autoblog: "Careening around a water-slicked skidpad, a tight slalom course, and a flat-out acceleration run at Las Vegas International Speedway in the new Nissan e-4ORCE twin-motor prototype, I get the distinct sensation that this vehicle, despite significant touting of efficiency and ride smoothness by the Nissan engineers on hand, is actually being designed with performance in mind."

He continues: " features include new motor control systems for smoother power application, and a new regenerative rear braking system, which, coupled with the front one, allows for smoother slowdowns. There's also a four-wheel, brake-based torque vectoring system for maximizing traction on curves and in challenging weather conditions. We’re not sure if a purely electric Z or GT-R would be met with shrieks of joy, or horror, from the faithful. But our time behind the wheel demonstrated that the acceleration and dynamics of this prototype are far, far superior to the standard, one-motor Leaf that Nissan also had on hand for us to skidpad, slalom, and drag."

QUESTION OF THE WEEK

David Partington: For the first QOTW of 2020 I thought I'd go right out on a limb and predict that UK BEV sales will hit 3 figures for the first time in 2020 ! Just imagine - 100,000 BEVs in one year ! My gut feel is that there will be enough consumer demand, mainly from the company car market driven by the change in the BIK, but the constraint will be supply of vehicles, even with loads of new BEV models hitting the market this year.....Now, I may be just a little bit too...
