Formatting Dialogue in Scripts

Formatting Dialogue in Scripts In this episode of Scriptease we’re looking at the basics of dialogue formatting in screenplays. Nailing the basics of screenplay format creates a more digestible story for the reader, allowing them to focus on your characters and plot rather than being bogged down in the text on the page. Dialogue format is essential for keeping your conversations and the positions of your characters clear.

We look at the three components of dialogue formatting in-depth: Character Cue, Dialogue and Parentheticals. Parentheticals in particular are a tricky technique for the novice screenwriter, so we look at why they are sometimes mocked as “wrylies” and what the legitimate uses of a parenthetical could be.
