Saleemah E. Knight is an American choreographer, performer, dance educator and invited guest artist to St. Peterburg, Russia's DAR Jazz Festival 2020. Saleemah E. Knight’s Contemporary Jazz master classes emphasize the cultural history of Jazz Dance as well as immerse the dancers in a comprehensive warm-up, progressions across the floor and Jazz Dance repertoire. The class begins with Saleemah’s original warm up which asks the students to begin sequencing Jazz Dance fundamentals and immediately implementing Jazz Dance performance techniques. Saleemah’s warm-up sets the foundations for the class by focusing on the social dancing body, groove, improvisation, architecture, shape, line, design, polycentrism, musicality/ rhythm and clarity between dynamic movement shifts. The warm up also encompasses isolation techniques inspired by the Matt Mattox tradition, relevant to teaching the difference between authentic and appropriated ideas of polycentrism in Jazz Dance, as well as giving dancers a method to approach the use of isolations throughout the larger part of the class. The class develops into progressions across the floor, focused on direction change, locomotion, grounded-ness, verticality and footwork, as well as the implementation of improvisational techniques supported by cultural experiences from the African American and Latin-X communities. Progressions and improvisational tasks are followed by Saleemah’s original Contemporary Jazz Dance repertoire, which aims to discover the possibilities of Jazz Dance in the contemporary era by utilizing movement techniques and cultural histories researched throughout the class.
