“Bernie Sanders and Pete Buttigieg were vying to build on their momentum from Iowa as polls started to close in New Hampshire on Tuesday evening, while Joe Biden and Elizabeth Warren started looking towards future contests to resurrect their flagging campaigns.
Some polls closed at 7pm in the Democratic race’s first primary; other voting locations are due to close at 8pm. Mr Sanders took an early lead with 27.7 per cent after 11 per cent of votes had been counted. Mr Buttigieg was second with 22.4 per cent, slightly ahead of Amy Klobuchar, the Minnesota senator, on 20.9 per cent. Ms Warren was far behind in fourth place, followed by Mr Biden.
Ms Warren, the senator from neighbouring Massachusetts who at one point led the polls, played down the importance of New Hampshire even before polls closed, suggesting she was preparing for a tough night.”
