This father expresses his disappointment with the Doula and the Midwife who did not "just tell the doctor that they didn't want the cord cut" after a home to hospital transfer. Men do not usually know that this is not the scope of the doula and midwife when they transfer. Even if they do know at the time the abuse is going down they are powerless and look to the professional they hired to what they wanted.
This is a common issue that we are confused about exactly what doulas and midwives can do. Because midwives and doulas have been seeking to change the systemic abuse of mothers and babies at birth in the medical environment, it appears to be their failing. It is not.
This clip from "The Other Side of the Glass" shows us the systemic problem that NO ONE - not the average father, not the doula, nor the grandma - is able to stop the disruptive, non-evidenced based practices, and abuse of the obstetric system.
Only a father who happens to be a physician had the inner authority to confront the system that he is part of and demand that his baby not be taken from the mother.
We need to stop training fathers and doulas to "protect women and babies" in the hospital. They can't. The hospital system has a life of its own. It is an egregore: "a group thought-form. It can be created either intentionally or unintentionally, and becomes an autonomous entity with the power to influence."
This video and the film it is in are an attempt to bring attention to the much-needed reform of the obstetric system. Everything women and advocates devise to create female autonomy and sovereignty, and gentle and empowering birth is confronted by the medical system.
Obstetrics does not want gentle, natural birth and empowered women who are left to create a secure attachment with their babies. Obstetrics is a business model. Obstetricians are trained surgeons.
