I saw the movie, A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood, this evening. There was one line in the movie that stood out for me. I don’t want to spoil the movie for anyone who hasn’t seen it, so I won’t give the context. At one point, Mr. Rogers said, “Anything mentionable is manageable.” There are some things in life that are scary or challenging to face or talk about. Mr. Rogers was big on facing whatever feelings are showing up and working through them. His point was that talking about issues makes them more manageable. I have found that to be very true in my life. When I don’t share what’s going on with me, it remains hidden and can be a source of guilt, fear, or shame. However, when I choose to bring hidden feelings or thoughts into the light by sharing them, they lose some of their power. I started making these videos as a way of working through the anxiety I have been dealing with. On my journey, I have learned that EVERYTHING is mentionable. There is no need to hide, no need to pretend that everything is ok. It is in bringing things to the light that I find freedom.
