The Bizarre Disappearance of Joan Gay Croft

On April 9 1947 there was a terrible tornado in Oklahoma. More than 1000 people were injured in only a matter of minutes.

One of those injured was Joan Gay Croft. Joan's mother Cleta had passed away when their house collapsed. Her father Olin was seriously injured. Joan and her sister Geraldine was being treated in the basement of the hospital, because there were so many patients.

Joan's knee had been pierced clean through with a thin piece of wood the size of a pencil. Geraldine had cuts and bruises on her body. Fortunately, they were not seriously injured.

The next day their aunt Ruth came to visit. Geraldine told Ruth that during the night two men came and took Joan away. A nurse confirmed this. The two men wore clothes that resembled what a rescue worker would wear at that time.

The two men came into the basement specifically looking for the Croft children. They told the nurses that they were taking Joan to a hospital in Oklahoma City and would pick up Geri later. Oklahoma City is over 120 miles away.

There was no one by the name of Joan Croft at that hospital however. Her family reported her missing and the search began.

Over the years 500 women have come forward claiming that they were Joan Croft, but none of them were.

Gene also had a scar on her leg where Joan was pierced by the piece of wood. Everyone was convinced that Gene was actually Joan Croft, but when they did a DNA test they found out she wasn't.

Most people believes that the two men were hired to take Joan and give her to a wealthy family that could not have children of their own.

It is also possible that Joan was taken and the plan was to demand ransom from Joan's father since he was the wealthiest man in Woodward.

Her remaining family still hopes that one day they will be reunited with Joan.
