The posterior denture border and the posterior palatal seal are critical to the retention of a maxillary denture. Terminate the denture on the hard palate and there will be a poor seal. Place the border too far posteriorly on the moveable soft palate and it's movement during speech and swallowing may dislodge the denture. In both cases the back of the denture can drop, contact the tongue, causing the patient to gag or believe that the denture is too long. This video shows how to determine where to end the denture and how to get the best posterior seal for optimal retention.
